Artist
Γιώργος Μπάτης (1885 –1967) was a Greek musician, singer, and writer of rembetika. His name is variously Romanised, including Giorgos Batis, Yiorgos Batis, and Yiorgos Ampatis. Yiorgos Batis was born Γιώργος Τσώρος (Yiorgos Tsoros) in Methana in 1885, and moved to Piraeus when he was very young. He served in the Greek army from 1912 to 1918. In the mid-1920s he opened a music school called "Carmen"; in 1931 he opened a café called "Georges Baté", which became one of the most important centres for rembetiko. He continued to work as a quack-salesman, improvising drugs for painful teeth and other minor ailments. In 1933, Batis made his first recording, playing bouzouki. From the 1930s he dedicated himself solely to music, and collaborated closely with, among others, Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης (Markos Vamvakaris) in the rembetiko band ("kompania") called Η τετράς η ξακουστή του Πειραιώς (the Famous Quartet of Peiraeas). He was known both as Γιώργος Μπάτης and as Γιώργος Αμπάτης. He appeared in Alekos Sakelariou's film Οι παπατζήδες (1954). He died on 10th March 1967 User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
