Artist
Known for her “high-flying virtuosity” and diamond-cut precision, South Korean Yeol Eum Son (born May 2, 1986, pronounced "Yadum Son") is one of Asia’s most fascinating artists to watch. At the Van Cliburn Competition in 2009 she won the Silver Medal and Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music. The following year, she took Silver again at the XIV Tchaikovsky Competition, along with Best Performance prizes for the Chamber Concerto and Commissioned Work. Concerto appearances include those with the New York Philharmonic led by Lorin Maazel on their well-publicized 2004 Asian tour and in Seoul in 2008. Her recordings include the complete Chopin Etudes (Universal Music) and another of her Van Cliburn Silver Medal performances (harmonia mundi). Son is a graduate of the Korean National University of the Arts and presently studies with Arie Vardi in Hannover, Germany. She is an honorary ambassador of her home city of Wonju and writes regularly for the Joong-Ang Times, one of Korea’s most widely-read publications.
