"Ah, man. These four songs are so good that it's almost unfair to call them “emo”. Not because Yellow Knife isn't a worthy inheritor of the legacy of, say, Sunny Day Real Estate, but because the word emo doesn't mean anything anymore. Let's just say that if you were listening to melodic post-hardcore music in the mid to late '90s, Yellow Knife will fit you like a faded old Jawbreaker T-shirt. The trio's members come by their sound honestly. Bassist Wes Cook played in All State Champion, while singer-guitarist Richard Fudalewski and drummer Kyle Ledingham are members of Jakartah. Together, the three make rock music that's characterized by jagged rhythms and soaring vocal melodies backed by impressive harmonies. The band (aided here by producer Greg Dawson) is skilled at keeping the overall sound relatively spacious even while hammering away at heavy riffs, as it does on the closing track, “Afghan and His Rifle”, which pounds to its climax with some seriously tight drumming. Awesome, but don't call it emo". -John Lucas (Georgia Straight) User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
