Artist
Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and producer Preservation collaborated on "The REcstatic," a full-length official remix album released on June 12, 2013, which reimagines Bey's 2009 album "The Ecstatic". Preservation, who served as Bey's tour DJ and had production credits on the original "The Ecstatic," undertook the project as a personal challenge, aiming to create sample-based remixes that maintained the original album's pitch, key, tone, and energy while using new, carefully sourced samples. The remix process was extensive, involving countless hours of crate digging and meticulous construction of beats around the original vocals, which remained intact. The project was initially conceived as a few remixes but evolved into a complete reworking of all 16 tracks, including a bonus unreleased vocal take of "Casa Bey" featuring production by Minnesota. Preservation described the work as a deeply personal endeavor, driven by his close connection to the original album's creation and his desire to honor its spirit. The remix album was released as a free download and was praised for its thoughtful approach, intellectual depth, and respect for the source material, standing in contrast to many contemporary remixes.
