Science nerd meets earthy artist to make sonically lush dance music... Umm excuse me? It sounds like the premise of some independent movie but it isn’t. It’s true. Danny Muller, a self-confessed lover of physics and visual artist Anna Hien make up the psychedelic electronic duo - Xanthopan. A classically trained pianist and violinist, Danny began his foray into dance music in the late 90s on Brisbane’s doof scene, attracting attention for his own brand of psychedelic electro. Never one to shy away from sonic experimentation, Danny has spent years honing his sound into a unique mix of genres; creating music that spans breaks, trance, acid and electro. Teaming up with Anna, an artist who paints trippy visualisations of music, the Xanthopan sound takes on an unexpected edge. Her lyrics, atmospherically delivered, are centred on the universe and what it is to be human. They provide a juxtaposition that distinguishes their music from the majority of contemporary dance. It is this mix of light and dark, thematically interesting but danceable that makes Xanthopan an accessible and diverse listen. In 2010, Xanthopan released their breakout single What’s the Chance of Being Wrong? and the accompanying music video – an eerie but beautiful artwork shot by Laura Dudgeon –received airplay on ABC’s music video programme, Rage.
