Artist
Wu Qiang (吴强, b. 1959, Shanghai) is a pipa virtuoso and long-time soloist with the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, celebrated for her expressive tone and technical brilliance. A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, she studied under Lin Shicheng and represents the Pinghu school lineage. Wu emerged during the 1980s as part of the generation that brought the pipa to the international stage through radio, touring, and recordings—her performances of Ambush from Ten Sides and Spring Rain are especially admired for their precision and lyricism. Her recordings with the China Record Corporation and later on international compilations, including Treasures of Chinese Instrumental Music, helped define the modern pipa sound for global audiences. Wu Qiang remains one of the key figures sustaining the high conservatory and broadcast performance tradition associated with Peng Xiuwen’s orchestra.
