There are two bands under the name Wifey. 1. Since sliding out of the birth canal in April 2008 Sydney band Wifey have won the Sydney University band competition and the NSW state campus competition. They have supported talents like Smudge, Youth Group, 78Saab, Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), Hugo Race (Ex Bad Seeds), Ned Collette, The City Lights and Dead Letter Chorus. "at times they sounded like a cross between Okkervil River and Dexys Midnight Runners with their melodic sensibilities." (doubtful sounds) “what’s really to get excited about here is the playful bounce of the beguiling Eccentric Boogaloo or the Elvis Costello-ish Chop it Off. Although the fiddle occasionally drags Wifey into folk cliché, theirs is a distinctly Australian sound that tips an accomplished nod at American greats such as Bonny Prince Billy and Tom Waits…no bad thing at all.” (faster louder) 2. Living by the “Don’t bore us, get to the chorus” credo and crashing out of the gates with a strikingly tuneful debut, Brooklyn’s Wifey is the next great, probably-doomed power pop band. They arrive to the scene armed with a slew of razor-sharp hooks, fueled by an addictive substance known as candysauce. The album is simply titled “Wifey Material,” and you’re unlikely to find a catchier set of songs released in 2025.
