While Heaven Wept (often abbreviated as WHW) is an American epic doom metal band from Dale City, Virginia. The band is led by guitarist, composer, and founding member Tom Phillips, who serves as its primary creative force. Known for a melodic and classically influenced style, While Heaven Wept is often compared to bands such as Solitude Aeturnus and Solstice, the latter of which Phillips was previously a member. Over time, the band's sound evolved beyond traditional doom metal, incorporating elements of progressive and other metal subgenres. This stylistic expansion became more prominent with the release of the 2003 album "Of Empires Forlorn", and continued with the 2009 album "Vast Oceans Lachrymose" and the 2011 album "Fear of Infinity". The band's lyrical themes frequently addressed sorrow, personal loss, and emotional despondency. After the release of the album "Suspended at Aphelion", While Heaven Wept went on hiatus from 2015 to 2018. They returned for a farewell tour that concluded at the Madrid Is the Dark festival in Spain on December 8, 2018. In August 2019, a partial reformation of the band took place when they performed as a last-minute replacement at Prog Power USA. Between the releases of "Fear of Infinity" and "Suspended at Aphelion", the band recorded an entire album that remains unreleased. According to Phillips, the unreleased material resembles the band's earlier sound and features guest guitar solos by Victor Arduini. Studio albums Sorrow of the Angels
