about

West Minist'r was from the Fort Dodge, Iowa area. They were together from the late 60s until around 1974. Band members were; Frank Wiewel (bass/vocals), Kirk Kaufman (guitar/vocals), Rusty Bell (guitar/vocals), Terry Dillion (keyboards/vocals '68-'69), Chuck Henderson (keyboards/bass '69-'72) and Dean Davis (drums '68-'71). Rick Schaeffer, Arnie Bode, and Keith Brown replaced the members who left the band early. The group put out at least 3 singles during their time together. The band was quite popular in Central and N. Central IA and played on the same bill as known bands of the time - Frijid Pink and the Buckinghams amongst others. In 1972, they turned their practice space - a brick chicken coop on the Kaufman farm - into a recording studio. The space was designed by Tom Hidley and named West Minist'r Sound - currently known as Junior's Motel. Two of the members - Frank and Kirk - went on to form Hawks who put out 2 albums on Columbia Records (Hawks and 30 Seconds Over Otho). A third album on CD was made available on Not Lame Recordings entitled "Perfect World Radio" which is now out of print. West Minist'r were inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, the studio was inducted in 2006, Hawks in 2007 and Kirk Kaufman in 2013 User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
