Some bands are born great. Others have greatness thrust upon them. None, however, are We Traded Magic for Science. Apart from them. Obviously. We Traded Magic for Science are an alternative rock band based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom The history of the band goes back to the turn of the century. Richard Omand-Good and Graeme Henderson met through mutual friends, hit it off and decided to start jamming (with Rod Maclean of The Starry Wisdom Cult). The threesome, who used several names including the Big Bully Boys, played together informally but due to a lack of direction decided to go their separate ways. Not long afterwards, Henderson and Good decided to give the band another go and recruited Gavin Laurie, to play guitar, and Mortimer, a bassist. Laurie and Morts were old friends of Graeme’s who had previously played together in various groups. An initial get together was held, where everyone had to choose a cover to learn (including Foo Fighters and Selecter songs). The four rapidly realised they were crap at covers and chose instead to concentrate on songwriting. The band eventually settled on the name Jonestown,though it could just as easily have been the Sphincter Extinctor or the Hoover Manouevre. After a year of pizzas and “tequila madness”, a half hour setlist of original material had been reached and Jonestown made their first public appearance at the Bongo Club in Edinburgh.
