Wayan Lotring, a common household name in Bali and other parts of Indonesia, was a master musician, band leader, and instrument designer responsible for a 1920s revision of court gamelan which became the dominant 20th century sound of Bali. He also re-worked and modified numerous pieces of traditional music for 20th century audiences, creating a powerful and monumental yet subtle and agile style full of nuance and intricate detail, before passing away in the mid 1980s.
