Formed in New York, NY in 2010, the Warrior Monks are best known for their inventive style and engrossing lyricism, as well as their uniquely dream-like beats. Warrior Monks consists of 4 members: Sulaymon, BrotherOfMoses, Hivemind, and WaMoo Papez. Their first EP (which was a collaboration with Simon Herzog), titled Fall of Rome EP, was released in early 2011. Their debut album, De Colores, will be released on June 15th, 2011. Sulaymon, born Alexander Thomas, has been rapping since age 12. Of Afro-Turkish heritage, his intercultural influences shine through in his lyricism, the content of which ranges from the Black Panthers to the Black Sea. His vocal delivery has been described as both smooth and abrasive, fitting complex rhyme schemes and metaphors into highly intricate verses and melodies. BrotherOfMoses, born Aaron Mouton, counters Sulaymon’s snake-like rhymes with a pungent, funky delivery all his own. Ranging in topics from Phillies blunts to prophecy, he fanatically draws on intensive word play and ambiguity in his metaphors, often forcing his listener to sit down and deconstruct his patterns of rhythm and thought. HiveMind, born Mario Alvarez, is the newest member of Warrior Monks and the younger
