Walter Strerath

Walter Strerath (* 18 September 1942 in Odenkirchen; † 23 September 1981 in Mönchengladbach) was a German jazz pianist. Strerath played at local events with his trio from 1960; he toured nationally from 1963. In the Netherlands, he also performed with Jack van Poll, Ruud Pronk and René Thomas. The performance at the second Hammerfeld Jazz Festival in Roermond was partly documented by ZDF. Parts of a performance in Iserlohn were broadcast by WDR.In the mid-1970s he played with his trio at the Cascais Jazz Festival and received an invitation to the Newport Jazz Festival. In 1976 Strerath appeared in the first broadcast of Kölner Treff with Alfred Biolek and Dieter Thoma, where he also had a piano battle with Freddy Quinn. In his main profession, Strerath worked for a long time in his father's business as an agricultural machinery dealer and only switched to the professional field in 1980. He died of a heart attack at the age of 39. Strerath was awarded third place at the German Amateur Jazz Festival in Düsseldorf in 1963, and two years later as best soloist. The following year, 1966, his trio (with bassist Michael Dieck and drummer Gert Pütz) received first place at this festival. In 1967 and 1968 he was the winner at the Mönchengladbach International Jazz Piano Festival; in 1968 he was honoured as best pianist at the Friedrich Gulda Festival in Vienna.In the same year he achieved third place at the Zurich Jazz Festival.
