The word Virelai comes from old French and means ”the beauty of music, dance and poetry”. The band was founded in 1999 by Søren Hammerlund and is based in Denmark. Virelai plays music from the middle ages. Mainly old Nordic ballads and songs, but the repertoire includes dancing melodies from the south of Europe (France, Italy and Spain) as well. Virelai has played more than 200 concerts, around Scandinavia and Europe. Since 2005 the 4 musicians started the project Valravn, where ancient Nordic music merges with electronics.
