Artist
Vicky D was an early 1980s New York singer active in the post-disco and boogie scene. Signed to SAM Records, she released the single “This Beat Is Mine” in 1981, produced by Gary R. Turnier of Gary’s Gang and co-written by André Booth. The track became a club favorite, reaching No. 11 on the U.S. Billboard Dance chart and No. 42 in the U.K., capturing the synth-driven funk and soul sound of the city’s underground dance floors. She followed with “Mystery Lover” in 1982, but it failed to chart, and little is known about her career afterward. Despite her brief run, “This Beat Is Mine” has endured as a staple of 1980s boogie compilations and DJ sets, marking Vicky D as a one-hit figure whose single perfectly encapsulated the early transition from disco to modern dance music.
