Verulam Big Band (VBB) are a school jazz / swing band from Verulam School, St. Albans. The band has been running for several years and recorded an album in the summer term of 2005. This was recorded live in the school music department. The band features a rhythm section comprised of drums, electric bass, guitars and piano; a woodwind section comprised of clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, a baritone saxophone and flutes; a brass section comprised of trumpets, trombones and tuba and also features male and female vocalists. The size of the band has fluctuated throughout the years as students come and go but stays around the 40-person mark. The band is currently conducted by music teachers Dave Southorn and Mike Harpham and was previously conducted (2005-2006) by Steve Merriman. The band has played at high-profile local events and can be hired. The band plays a large concert at Verulam every summer.
