He was born in Mudhanai, a small village in Vridhachalam in Cuddalore district. Agriculture was the main activity of the village, and his parents were poor agricultural labourers. Folksongs had always fascinated Velmurugan since his boyhood. Singing was the second nature of the village folks and no occasion was complete without songs. Be it a village festival, agricultural activities such as transplanting, weeding, harvesting, etc, or a funeral, there was no dearth of songs. Whenever he heard songs, Velmurugan used to sing along with them.His talent in singing was spotted by his class teacher, and Velmurugan got an opportunity to sing at the school function. Everyone praised his performance and Velmurugan decided to become a singer. He finished his schooling, did an ITI course and acquired various skills such as typing, computer etc. Simultaneously he developed his talent in singing and used to perform in local functions. At one point of time, his friends persuaded him to acquire a formal degree in singing and Velmurugan came to Chennai in 2002.
