Vauxdvihl was an Australian progressive metal band. Vauxdvihl was formed in 1992 in Melbourne by guitarist and songwriter Fab Gallen. The band was originally named Vaudeville, a term chosen to reflect what Gallen considered the variety of their musical influences. However, after discovering that another band already used the name, they changed it to Vauxdvihl. After initial difficulties completing the lineup, the band released a demo containing three songs, all of which were later included on their 1994 debut album "To Dimension Logic". The album was recorded independently at the band’s own expense, which limited the recording time to 12 days. It received positive attention from critics within the progressive and avant-garde metal scenes and has been described by some as an influential release in that field. In 2010, Rock Hard magazine ranked it sixth among the 15 most important progressive metal albums. Following the album’s release, Frederic Leduc and Edward Katz left the band. Katz later became a member of the Australian band Where Echoes End, which also included former Vauxdvihl member Paul Read. Leduc and Katz went on to form Department in 1997. The remaining members of the original lineup released a further demo in 1996 and independently issued the EP "Vog" in 1998. Plans for a second studio album were announced in interviews but were never realised, due to the inability to secure a record deal and a lack of funds for self-production.
