V.O.N. is an electronic music experiment by Josiah Schmidt (not to be confused with the black metal band "Von"). The project was started in Enon, Ohio but now continues in Emmetsburg, Iowa. V.O.N. was formed in 2008 by Schmidt, when the first album, "Value of Nonaggression," was released. The album incorporates a variety of styles and genres, including IDM, EDM, electronica, ambient, house, tribal, traditional East Asian, and glitch. Classical influences can also be heard, with orchestral samples in Death of the State, and RS.S4.Dm.M3 being an electronic cover of the third movement of Robert Schumann's Symphony 4 in D minor. The music frequently takes on themes of economics: Unconventional Truths and Division of Labor sample audiobooks about the market economy; Janus samples a speech from former President George W. Bush on his economic policies; Stagflation Coming references a rare economic condition of simultaneous stagnation and price inflation; and Take That, Atavistic Luddites! denounces the fear of technological progress. Schmidt himself describes the genre he was trying to create as "electronic economics music," and said, "Other than a few basic percussion instruments, I tried to avoid ever using the same instrument twice or making any two songs sound alike." Schmidt is the only member of the band and does not give live performances.
