Keen to pick up a guitar again following his post-Parts & Labor noisy electronic solo output, Dan Friel formed the no-less-clamorous Upper Wilds. Comprised of Friel on guitar and vocals, Zach Lehrhoff (Ex Models) on bass and vocals, and Aaron Siegel on drums, the trio released their debut record via Thrill Jockey in 2017. Awash with distortion, fuzz, and space references, Guitar Module 2017 combined crushing volume with buried melodies bringing together elements of Friel's former band and his solo efforts. Upper Wilds returned in 2018 with another, more overtly, interplanetary offering. Siegel was replaced by Jeff Ottenbacher for Mars, which charted the colonization of the red planet in typically noisy yet stubbornly melodic fashion. The group issued Venus in 2021, and Jupiter in 2023. The third installment in the trio’s exploration of our solar system looks to its largest planet for a daring exploration of scale and perspective. New York underground mainstay Dan Friel’s melodic gifts and wry lyricism are magnified and propelled ever outwards by the thundering rhythm section of bassist Jason Binnick and drummer Jeff Ottenbacher, all immersed in rippling fuzz. Just like its namesake, Jupiter stands as Upper Wilds most colossal offering in their catalog. The raw power of their music is amplified to titanic proportions,
