Unknown Hinson (born Stuart Daniel Baker, 1954) is an American musician, songwriter, and voice actor known for his satirical blend of rockabilly, country, and comedy. Performing as a vampire-like Southern caricature, he built a cult following through television, recordings, and live performances. Hinson first gained recognition in the early 1990s on the Charlotte, North Carolina, public access program The Wild, Wild South, which he co-created with Don Swan. The show introduced his stage character “Unknown Hinson,” a parody of country music stereotypes. After the program ended, he shifted his focus to music, releasing albums such as Rock ’n’ Roll Is Straight From Hell (1999) and The Future Is Unknown (2000). Later works included Target Practice (2002) and Reloaded (2012), showcasing his mix of honky-tonk, rockabilly, and comedic lyrics. During the 2000s and 2010s, Hinson toured nationally, performing as a headliner and with acts such as Hank Williams III, Rev. Horton Heat, and Southern Culture on the Skids. His music drew a diverse fan base, and he gained further recognition as the voice of Early Cuyler on Adult Swim’s Squidbillies (2005–2019). In 2020, Hinson was criticized for social media posts that included disparaging remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement and singer Dolly Parton’s public support for it.
