With roots tracing back to 1859, The University of Michigan Men's Glee Club is one of the oldest collegiate choruses in the U.S. and the oldest continually-run student organization on the Michigan campus. The Glee Club was honored in 1959 to become the first American male chorus to win first place at the prestigious International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, and has since won three more first prizes at that same competition. The Club achieved its reputation as one of the finest male choruses in the world by sustaining and respecting its official motto -- "In Tradition, Camaraderie, and Musical Excellence" -- throughout its 154 year history. The graduate and undergraduate members of the Glee Club, chosen by audition, represent a majority of the University's schools and colleges and its student officers are responsible for the management of all non-musical Glee Club operations. The Glee Club tours annually, both within the U.S. and around the world, and has become renowned for its wide repertoire of music that spans many musical styles and periods including Renaissance motets, Romantic anthems, opera choruses, folksongs, spirituals, contemporary works, and (of course!) Michigan songs. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
