Formed by Gene Loves Jezebel’s JP Aston & Peter “Bugg” Rizzo in the grand old City of York in 2011, Ugly Buggs have completed their eponymous first album. Peter had written some music. Recording, engineering & playing all the instruments he presented the music to Jay. This music would quickly become the beautiful song “Feel.” “I just felt Pete’s music was inspirational & we had to make an album. I had quite a few songs to bring to the table too.” Ah, JP Aston & songs. It’s no coincidence that artists as varied as Lady Gaga, Graham Coxon & Billy Corgan have all cited Jay as an influence. Jay got up & sang with Smashing Pumpkins at Brixton Academy in November. Ugly Buggs decided to embrace their fiercely independent roots & do the whole album themselves (including creating their own videos & artwork). “Peter is a fearless musician & loved the challenge of production. I just got the express train up to York from London every couple of months & I’d sing all night & Peter would mix all day.” The album captures Jay Aston in glorious full voice. Peter Bugg’s musicianship is outstanding & together they've created a superb collection of songs. The album captures moments of great joy & despair. Reflections of a traumatic year. Beautiful refractions. Sometimes bleak & sometimes necessarily oblique.
