U Thant was the Burmese diplomat and the third Secretary-General of the United Nations, from 1961 to 1971, that Welsh language, psycadelic indie rock band U Thant name themselves after. The band was a pre-cursor band to Super Furry Animals (Guto Pryce on Bass & Huw Bunford on Geetar) & Catatonia (Owen Powell). They were based in Cardiff, Wales & to my knowledge they released 1 E.p "Dim I.d./No I.d." (1989), One Mini Album "Bugeilio/Shepherd" (1988), & 2 albums. "Duwuwd" (1991) & "Acid Neu Alcohol/Acid Or Alcohol" (1994). All of these records are now becoming rather rare as the Welsh speaking community has a much smaller audience than it's English speaking counterparts, so thus pressing runs are usually smaller. They were voted Welsh band of 1988. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
# U Thant: A Forgotten Archive of Welsh Psychedelia This band merits rediscovery as a crucial document of 1980s-90s Welsh language experimental rock. Operating within a deliberately obscure linguistic space, U Thant created densely layered psychedelic work that refused accessibility without sacrificing sonic ambition. Their catalog—particularly the albums *Duwuwd* and *Acid Neu Alcohol*—demonstrates how regional scenes generate distinct aesthetics when insulated from mainstream English-language circuits. The involvement of members who'd later shape Catatonia and Super Furry Animals suggests these recordings capture formative creative moments. As physical copies become increasingly scarce,
