U Myint Maung is yet another name variation of Myint Maung, a.k.a. Inle Myint Maung. "U" is Burmese for "Mr." Inle Myint Maung (1937–2001) was a saung-gauk player from Myanmar. The saung-gauk is a Burmese harp. He was best known for performing classical works, known as Mahagita (Sanskrit for Great Songs). These are from the genre known as Thachinkan, often seen as the most poetic and refined of their era. U Myint Maung was considered one of the best harpists of the modern era. Originally from Inle Lake, he became an apprentice of the legendary U Ba Than in 1962. He later moved to Mandalay, far from Rangoon, and established a school in his home. In 1965 he won a competition at the Mandalay School of the Arts. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
