about

Rickie Gal; songwriter, pianist, poet, and singer, started Twilight of the Idle in 2005 at Purchase College. In the beginning, the project was a four-piece rock band, and they performed at campus events as well as New York City clubs such as the Pyramid and the late CBGB’s 313 Gallery. Twilight of the Idle metamorphosed into a cabaret duo when Gal was inspired by the jazz musicians around hir*, and began to experiment with and combine different styles. With hir politically-infused lyrics that are sometimes subtle and upbeat like “Be A Lady,” a fictitious account of getting expelled from charm school, and sometimes quite heavy like “I Do Not Consent To A Search”, ce puts dissent and protest back into jazz. Of course, ce writes love songs as well. Rickie Gal was born in Israel (and is often confused with a singer there of the same name) and raised in New Jersey. Ce recorded an original pop album at age 15 and has been performing original music since then. While ce has always used the piano as a compositional tool, ce started to focus on it as an instrument at Purchase, where ce was a studio composition major. Rickie Gal now lives in Brooklyn and performs around the New York original music scene. Past shows include Outpost, the Yippie Museum, the Delancey, a residency at a variety show at the lesbian dance club Cattyshack, and the opening of an activist space in Niagara Falls. Gal has recently released hir debut album of Twilight of the Idle, titled “Modesty” with drummer Kim
