TriO -- saxophonist/flutist Sergey Letov, bassoonist/swanee whistler Alexandr Alexandrov and trumpeter/althornist Yury Parfenov -- are an unusual ensemble configuration. On Forgotten Streets of St. Petersburg, they are joined by Tuvan singer Sainkho Namchylak, a vocalist with an extraordinary range and the ability to perform the throat-singing techniques of her native land. Thus, an "unusual" ensemble becomes even more so. The quartet's music evokes a strange melange of playing styles, ethnicities and genres, but the juxtapositions and confluences of these disparate threads often lead to engaging music that's startling in its immediacy.
