The incendiary Lebanese hip-hop duo Touffar has become a local rap phenomenon, despite their scarce financial resources and modest musical experience. Nasser al-Din and Jaafar, the two members of the group, will be introducing Beirut audiences to some of their new songs from their second album Off to the Commune this Friday night at Beirut Theater. They will also be performing songs from their first album Owners of the Land. Touffar’s bold and unambiguous rap lyrics have expanded their fan base to a wide audience, some of whom have had limited rap exposure before now. “We do not rap because this is a cool thing for others to listen to without being disturbed. If our work is not annoying, we regard it as a failure. We would have to reconsider our entire project,” Jaafar said. The group’s songs don’t shy away from tearing down what may be considered sacred in polite Lebanese society.In Friday’s concert, Touffar promises to intensify their characteristic criticism of Lebanese society and politics. “We will rap about the state crackdown on construction violations, injustice at Roumieh prison, the possible return of Lebanese collaborators with Israel, and about South Lebanon and Palestine,” Nasser al-Din said. The topics they cover are drenched with class rage and a take-no-prisoners defiance to authority.
