Who is Tommie James? Answer...An Emcee that takes pride in the fact that he speaks the truth when he rhymes. He often draws on personal experiences to craft songs about love, success, failure and society as a whole. Born in Teaneck, NJ, Tommie James rejects the notion that you have to be a “Gangster” in order to make it in the entertainment business. Tommie says “I never sold drugs and I’ve never been shot. Does that mean my story is less real than another person? Am I not real because of that?” Tommie has always been into music. As a child, he would listen to classic artist such as Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and James Brown. However, by the age of 12, rappers like Run D.M.C, Rakim and Big Daddy Kane had inspired him to pursue hip hop. Tommie has also been influenced by other genres of music such as Rock & Roll, Classical, Jazz and The Blues. “I consider myself a student of music.” Tommie says “It’s in my veins. I rap because that’s my instrument and I just want to contribute my song to the sound track of life”. Along with writing rhymes and listening to music, Tommie enjoys spending time with friends and family. Tommie says “They keep me grounded.
