The year was 1946 and Basil Rathbone had been playing Sherlock Holmes opposite Nigel Bruce on both the silver screen as well as radio since 1939. He missed the variety of roles he had once enjoyed. For this reason, Rathbone decided not to return to The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for the 1946-47 season. The show was still high in the ratings and so a new Sherlock Holmes had to be found. After a frantic search, Tom Conway was chosen. Nigel Bruce chose to stay with the series and in fact, was given top billing over Tom Conway.
