Artist
Todd Phillips (born April 21, 1953) is an American double bassist. He has appeared on many innovative, as well as traditional, acoustic instrumental and bluegrass recordings made since the mid-1970s. A two-time Grammy Award winner and original founding member of The David Grisman Quintet, Phillips has made a career of performing and recording with acoustic music artists such as five-year stint in The Tony Rice Unit, his membership of The Bluegrass Album Band, and his playing on recordings by acoustic music's finest including Vassar Clements, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Stéphane Grappelli, Taj Mahal, John Hartford, Jerry Douglas, Alison Brown, Mike Marshall, Stuart Duncan, Tim O'Brien, Bryan Sutton, Chris Thile, Del McCoury, Natalie MacMaster, Darrell Scott, and Larry Campbell. It was after meeting fellow mandolin builder David Grisman that Phillips' career quickly shot to the top with his groundbreaking performance on 2nd Mandolin on Grisman's original David Grisman Quintet album in 1977. Since then, Todd switched back to his primary instrument, the bass, and has led a fruitful career, both as a soloist and as a session and touring musician with some of the biggest names in both bluegrass and jazz. He has been an active part of the Montreux Band, and frequently collaborates with Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Tony Rice, Paul McCandless, Philip Aaberg, David Grier, Tony Trischka, Alison Krauss, Andy Narell and many more.
