Toñín Romero

Presenter of several radio shows during the 50s and 60s, Toñín Romero is a central figure in plena history, who embodied better than anyone the exchanges between this genre and jíbara music. Although he didn’t record much, and most of it belonged to this latter tradition, he composed a great number of successful plenas for different groups of this period. A native of the rural municipality of Jayuya, Toñín Romero embodies better than anyone the interactions between rural music and plena, of coastal and urban origin. Toñín came from the mountains of the interior of the island but lived his whole life in Ponce, “the noble city” of the southern coast of Puerto Rico and the birthplace of plena. He would liven up live music shows such as La Hora Campesina and Fiesta en el Batey on the radio and later on television with the show Borinquen Canta, which featured and mixed a very wide variety of criollo traditions, including guaracha, merengue, bolero and plena. He was the composer of great classics like ‘El charlatán’, popularized by Ismael Rivera con la Orquesta Panamericana, ‘El cofresito’ by Ruth Fernández and ‘Ni de madera son buenas’ by Odilio González. He also distinguished himself recording his own repertoire of rural music, plena and parranda (a kind of traditional Christmas music).
