Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union is but one of the many solo outings for irrepressible You Am I frontman Tim Rogers. As the chief singer-songwriter and boss raconteur for one of Australia's finest rock 'n' roll acts, Rogers' fronted You Am I for four studio albums between 1993 and 1998, before embarking on his first solo outing in 1999. What Rhymes With Cars and Girls was released under the Tim Rogers & The Twin Set banner via Ra Records (BMG), reaching #14 in the Australian album charts. Among the Twin Set lineup was Davey Lane, who would later join You Am I as second guitarist, as well as Ian Kitney and Stuart Speed, who would later form the rhythm section for Tim Rogers and The Temperance Union. After touring and promoting the album, Rogers returned to the helm of You Am I, releasing a live album - Saturday Night, 'Round Ten - in late 1999, followed by a new studio album, Dress Me Slowly in 2001. After touring their sixth studio album, Deliverance in 2002, You Am I underwent a brief hiatus, allowing Rogers to concentrate on his solo material once again. Heading into the studio with a reconfigured lineup as Tim Rogers & The Temperance Union, the new band also saw Rogers' solo sound evolve from the Twin Set's country/folk sound to something more akin to his rock 'n' roll roots. 2004's Spit Polish featured Shane O'Mara (guitar), Stuart Speed (bass) and Ian Kitney (drums/percussion), as well as guest vocals from Lisa Miller on the track Damn Songs.
