Tigers and Monkeys is a new band from New York City fronted by songwriter and guitarist Shonali Bhowmik. Taking cues from the cities in which she has slept, drank, studied and done her laundry in including Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta and New York, Shonali creates a potent blend of rock, blues, soul, garage and country with the fervor of an honest woman with more than a few things to say. A foot stomping gal, Shonali's music is inspired by classic bands such as the Beatles, Big Star, Earth, Wind, and Fire and The Pixies. After cutting her teeth with the Atlanta band Ultrababyfat, Shonali decided to make the leap to New York City to find collaborators that would help translate her darker and moodier songwriting side. Shonali is aided by the talents of Joachim Kearns (guitar), Jason Lam (bass), Jeff Sheinkopf (keys, drums), Russell Dungan (keys, drums)and Antonia Santangelo (percussion, dancing). These musicians give Shonali the flexibility to pull off an intimate, yet rockin' performance, where a strong garage punk piece can be kicked in the gut by a twangy blues number. Tigers and Monkeys has shared stages with Sleater Kinney, The Shins and Ted Leo and The Pharmacists. Following a show opening for Urge Overkill at New York Citys Bowery Ballroom, the band was approached by an enthusiastic sound engineer, Kenny Lienhardt.
