Artist
Thomas "Mera" Gartz, born 1944, was best known as the drummer in Swedish progg group Trӓd, Grӓs och Stenar (also known as Pӓrson Sound, Harvester or International Harvester), but had played drums with Swedish psychedelic group Mecki Mark Men for several years beforehand. Upon the demise of Träd, Gräs och Stenar, Gartz took no break. He continued in his roles as a painter and self-described philosopher, and kept on recording with other groups. In 1976 Gartz released a solo record, Sänger, consisting of recordings done a couple years earlier with help from his former bandmates. The record is sung entirely in Swedish; often played on acoustic instruments; and touching on both traditional folk elements, vague ethnicisms, and dark psychedelic jamming. Explained Gartz, “There were so many words that were not sung on my part [in Träd, Gräs och Stenar] so I had to write some songs.” At various points Gartz was also an integral member of Archimedes Badkar, Arbete och Fritid, Bengt Berger's Bitter Funeral Beer Band, The Hot Boys, and Fire! Orchestra, whose first album marks the musician's final recorded performance before his death in 2012.
