They Were Thieves is the group that plays the music of songwriter Steven Bakker. The band's lineup has changed since it's founding in 2006, but Bakker's songs have been a mainstay. The original lineup featured Bakker on guitar, Jonathan DeHaan (currently of Distractions) on upright bass and Jonah Ogles playing electric guitar, slide guitar and piano. They released their first EP in 2006. They Were Thieves then joined Pretty All Right Records, a Chicago-based label owned by friend Tom Owens (currently playing in Distractions and Pet Lions). Owens played drums in the group. They released their first full-length album, Red River Blue, on the label. Owens produced the album. After Owen and Dehaan moved to Chicago in 2007 and 2008, respectively. At that time Ogles began playing with Rob Kenagy in a collaborative project known as Ganges. Bakker soon joined the two as a drummer and percussionist. Kenagy began playing with They Were Thieves at the same time.
