The Vespertines are a rock band from Long Beach, Calif., featuring Vanessa Acosta (vocals/trumpet), Kyle Cavaness (bass/keyboards), Alex Kater (guitars) and Chris Walker (drums/programming). The group is known for a genre-busting mix of rock, jazz, funk, and reggae, all built around Acosta's raw, emotional vocals and occasional trumpet freakouts. The Vespertines' first release, the four-song Gravity Optional EP, was recorded at Compound Studios in Signal Hill and released in 2009. Follow-up full-length One Last Time Around the Equator, which the band also recorded at the Compound, was released in 2011. The band decamped to the legendary Rancho de la Luna Studios in Joshua Tree, Calif., for their second full-length, Arete, which was released in 2014. The band's most recent EP, Moretta, was recorded at York Recording Studios in Highland Park, Calif., and released in 2016.
