There are multiple groups under the name of The Utopias. The original was active beginning in the mid-sixties, begun by a brother-sister combo in David and Julie Lasley, along with their friend Joan Hughes. Being fans of the girl group records of the time, they started one of their own and named it in honor of The Shangri-Las. The group released three records, the first of which was Sally Bad on the Fortune label. It was followed by a couple of other singles that leaned more towards a Northern Soul style. These were released on Hi-Q and LaSalle. When the group called it quits, David toured in the Hair musical, and eventually had great success as a studio singer and songwriter. There is also a modern group using the name of The Utopias, which is generally regarded as a punk/rock group.
