Little brother band of the MC5, the Up were a tough, blue-collar crew out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, formed in 1967, kicking out raw, distorted proto-punk freakout jams. The Up lived together with the MC5 for a period in the late-60's at the Hill Street commune in Ann Arbor, where they indulged in drugs, sex, and rock 'n roll, and became politically active with the Fifth Estate and White Panther Party. Managed by Dave Sinclair (brother of legendary John), the band played regionally and opened for the MC5 with much frequency from about 1967 to around 1972, but failed to reach even the level of underground success that musical kins The Stooges or MC5 would.
