The Soul Hustlers are a Helsinki-based duo that blend original Delta-based grooves and aggressive Hip Hop beats. DJ Hereill (FIN) lays down the thick rhythmic backbone via turntables and sampler, as the soulful voice of Alaska Kalanen (USA) complements the raw, earthy sounds beaten out of his steel slide guitar. That's the technical side. The experience is something entirely original, refreshingly energetic and often political, evoking musical references from Pete Rock & CL Smooth to the songs of cotton field laborers from the early 1900's - and everything in between. The Hustlers have been steadily evolving their sound ever since their 2005 debut at Estonia’s Tartu Resofest (with Bullfrog Brown and others), where their unique music earned an enthusiastic response. In 2006 Alaska had landed the opening spot on Don Johnson Big Band’s Fall tour, and by the end of the year this unlikely act had their own tour in Tokyo. In 2007 the duo has increasingly been turning heads around the Baltic region, and they’re not slowing down. Collaborations so far include the amazing Tomas Cong (aka DJ Gabro), Maxwell Levi Eaton of New Orleans, Üllär Kärt of Bullfrog Brown on harp, Tõnis Kärson on djembe, vocalist Pille Siht, double bassist Jaska Prepula, and Mac the Knife Okuyama. www.nordicblues.fi User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
