Artist
The Rainbows were a group started in high school in Washington, D.C. They were a hot group in local talent shows and parties. Members of the group were Jessie Belvin, Billy Stewart and Marvin Gaye. There song Mary Lee was the first fast tempo of the "Doo Wop" rhythm and blues. This was a time when there were several groups blossoming in D.C.: The Clovers, Faith, Hope and Charity, Ray, Goodman and Brown (originally Mark [Greene] and the Moments then the Moments), The Starlighters (later Anacostia, both led by Van McCoy) etc. This led to a period where several people and groups performed and recorded while attending Howard University in the late 50β to mid-late 60βs.
