The Nine Tails are the product of gritty blues infused classics such as Led Zeppelin and The Stooges, combined with the essence of contemporary East London. At first listen The Nine Tails sound more like they fell out of a garage in Detroit in 1970 rather than a cramped flat in Hackney circa 2010. But with wall-to-wall harmonies, charmingly filthy vocals and what could possibly be described as obscene guitar licks, The Nine Tails do as many an Englishman before – taking the quintessentially American art form of Rock N Roll and infusing it with British swagger. Live, The Nine Tails are a breath of fresh air – not hovering over the bounds of pretension or skulking behind their instruments, they’re a burst of sweaty, sexy energy. Front man Gerard MacNeill’s presence can only be depicted as “writhing.” 2011’s One’s To Watch lists will inevitably be chalk full of Mac-books, quirky female vocalists and moody lo-fi projections – a list desperately in need of a band capable of taking the ever-popular classic rock band and spinning it into something relevant, sexy and the quality missing from music more than anything these days, fun.
