The Malinke were a tribe subjugated by the Sosso. The Sosso king, Samunguru Kante, killed all the eleven heirs of the chief of the Malinke tribe. He disdained to kill the twelfth because the child was sickly and crippled and not expected to live. However, the child Sundieta Kieta survived and grew up into a courageous young man. He united the Malinke against the Sosso and led them to victory in 1235 A. He then went on a conquering spree and founded the empire of Mali. It was the richest and the biggest empire in Black Africa in the 13th century when Europeans talked in hushed whispers about Mali’s ‘mountains of gold.’ The ‘mountains of gold’ have long since vanished. Today Mali a poor agricultural country with cotton accounting for 50 percent of its exports. It sprawls over an area of about 1,240,000 sq. km in West Africa, but has a population of only about 10,000,000 most of them illiterate and unaware of their glorious past. Its capital and largest city is Bamako. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
