A humble Maxwell says in an interview with CMJ, “I guess my music is auto-biographical for the most part. I wish that I could write stories and tales but in the end I’m just writing about the same stuff as everyone else…a girl, losing friends, stuff like that. I guess it’s because the music is close to me and I can’t pretend I’m something that I’m not.” This is ultimately an understatement of his unique coming of age element that has become central to the writing and sound that is distinguishable from other music with the same aspirations. Listening to the Histories it is audible that Maxwell’s inspiration lies within his friends at home, school and the transition into a college life; socially, academically, emotionally, financially, etc. “I find my music in things like getting old and dealing with that—the boredom and insignificance that develops after high school,” Maxwell says, “I wrote ‘Like Parties Mean Anything’ during my freshman year when I didn’t have a sense of meaning and I try to write music that I like, but that I think other people will like too. I like hip-hop a lot because it always remembers that it has an audience which is something that I try to do as well.” With the release of his first official EP entitled There Is Absolutely No Difference Between Anybody (self released), Histories fans have grown loyal and since his first performance, Maxwell has been able to solidify a strong audience.
