The High Level Ranters are a traditional band from Newcastle, England They took their name from that city’s High Level Bridge (which isn’t far from the High Level Folk Club). They specialise in songs and tunes from the north of England. Their original line-up, from 1969 to 1979, consisted of Alistair Anderson (concertina, Northumbrian pipes), Tommy Gilfellon (guitar), Johnny Handle (accordion, piano), and Colin Ross (fiddle, Northumbrian pipes). Latterly the group became a trio of Ross, Handle, and Jim Hall (Northumbrian pipes). See also: The New High Level Ranters.)
