http://the-happy-unfortunate.blogspot.com/ The Happy Unfortunate are a new upcoming Winnipeg based hip hop group focused on providing an alternative to mainstream rap. Their style is aimed at providing smooth, laidback and jazzy tunes that you can still bop your head to. The group is comprised on Daniel “Envoy” Caneda and Malcolm-Jamal Wilson. Malcolm-Jay. is the emcee while Envoy handles all the production and also emcees. Influences for the group vary from hip hop from the early 90’s to Motown soul hits from the 60’s. Some of their all time favorites are pete rock & cl smooth, a tribe called quest, de la soul, eric b & rakim, mf dom, the pharcyde, the souls of mischief, slum village, marvin gaye, stevie wonder, the isley brothers, the silvers, the Jackson five and chaka khan. Envoy is only 15 and has been producing beats since mid 2005. Malcolm-Jay. is 19 and has been rapping since early 2005. They both grew up together and influenced each others music, but The Happy Unfortunate didn’t form until the summer of 2007. The formation of the group stemmed from personal tragedies when both of their fathers passed away unexpectedly 2 days from each other. The group name “The Happy Unfortunate” is based on the idea of staying positive through tough times. Their positivism is evident in music and they have been developing their sound ever since.
