the eskimo squad are kiwi producer oakley grenell (og) and 3 montserratian refugees, raggadon, wacklar and ishaka. they came together, far away from their respective places of birth, in the metropolitan melting pot of london in mid 2003. oakley and raggadon had met previously in new zealand while he was over there on tour as part of the dubwize soundsystem. oakley got him to record on one of his tracks, sirens. when oakley traveled to london later that year raggadon introduced him to the rest of the squad. raggadon, ishaka and wacklar had been performing together for many years, forming the core of several hip hop groups .when a volcano on the island of montserrat began to erupt in 1995, the boys were forced to flee and set up life amidst the hustle and bustle of london town. in 2004 they released their debut album ‘city that frosts' on og’s christchurch based central records to critical acclaim. a heady mix of dancehall and hip hop, rhythmically and lyrically inspired by london’s clubs and cosmopolitan vibes, it combined authentic caribbean vocal wit and dexterity with innovative hooks and beats. currently the eskmos are working on their solo albums, with raggadon’s completed and ishakas almost done.
