The Entire Population of Hackney was a short-lived supergroup featuring members of Iron Maiden, FM and Urchin that performed two concerts in December 1985. The name is also used for a bootleg recording of the first show. The project is notable for influencing Adrian Smith to form his ASAP project and contributing to his temporary departure from Iron Maiden in 1990; he returned to the band in 1999 and has remained a member since, while also pursuing other projects. The project also led to the first Iron Maiden recording without the current lead singer on lead vocals. Following the end of Iron Maiden's World Slavery Tour in July 1985, the band took a six-month break. Drummer Nicko McBrain, seeking to play during this downtime, rented a rehearsal studio and invited guitarist Adrian Smith to jam. They were joined by Dave Colwell, Visage guitarist Andy Barnett, and Martin Connoly, a friend of McBrain's and member of Marshall Fury. Colwell and Barnett were part of an early line-up of FM, who had written "That Girl" in 1984 with bassist Merv Goldsworthy and drummer Pete Jupp. This early version was performed by The Entire Population of Hackney and later covered by Iron Maiden, while FM reworked parts for their 1986 debut album, "Indiscreet".
