The Drowned God is a post-hardcore band based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its earliest members, Cody Golob and Brandon Baun, met while collaborating on a black metal project in early 2015. The partnership ignited what would become a five-piece ensemble. After involving members Lucas Dunn, Brian Brennan, and Dan Scanlon later that year, they wrote and released their debut record, Moonbearer. Their introduction left an affecting impression stretching the genre with notes of longing and melancholy while maintaining a complexity known to traditional hardcore. Their sophomore record I'll Always Be the Same continues challenging the metal niche with towering instrumentation and atmospheric tones. The record, released through Solid State Records, clutches themes of emotional restlessness, identity, and the pursuit of change and hovers—suspended somewhere between genres—as haunting and ungraspable as the band itself.
