The Dark Third are a seven-piece art rock collective, formed in Auckland, New Zealand in 2013. The band currently consists of Daniel Hay (vocals, piano), Denys Matveev (bass guitar), Luiz Paganelli (lead guitar), Elliot McKenzie (secondary guitar, backing vocals), Christan Pianta (drums), Evelyn Benson (violin) and Frank Talbot (saxophone). The group is currently spread between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Known for consistent genre shifts, the band's core is based in art rock, atmospheric rock and progressive rock, but have incorporated elements of shoegaze, dream pop, post-rock, ambient, black metal, progressive metal, indie rock and emo. The band are known for their unique use of saxophone and violin, often using sampled loops of the instruments in place of traditional keyboard pads.
